The Ma-at Sophist Fellowship offers opportunities for those who want to realize the Egyptian wisdom and ways in their own lives and needs.
The Ma-at Sophist Fellowship will focus on the universal humanistic aspects of Sophism, which is found in its purest and clearest form in the Ancient Egyptian system. Members can also participate in our discussion group, moderated by Moustafa Gadalla. Lectures, conferences, travel, etc, will be detailed later. |
Herodotus stated in 500 BCE, "Of all the nations in the world, the Egyptians are the happiest, healthiest and most religious." Religiousness, is spirituality. Dogmatic religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) kill spirituality. Dogmatic religions are about the outer world. It's about a community of believers. It's about dogma, scriptures, rules, and rituals. People are brought together because they believe that God is this, or God is that. All you have to do is "believe" and you are automatically in God's graces. It's easy!! You don't have to engage in the hard, and sometimes painful, inner work of realizing your selfishness and how you have hurt people you love, in an effort to become a better person. All you have to do is believe!! It is therefore that such prophetic religions hold such a prominent position in our materialistic and external world today, and that spiritual activities are often looked at as 'kooky' or 'crazy' - the devil's work or pagan activities.
Many people who did not find fulfillment in the dogmatic religions moved on to other Eastern philosophies, such as Taoism, Zen Buddhism, Afro-Caribbean, Gnosticism, Hermetic Science, Metaphysics, Hinduism, etc. But for most, they all seemed incomplete (possibly because they all were partial recreations of the original Egyptian mystical philosophy).
More and more people are finding that his/her ideals and thoughts are turning more and more to the humanistic Egyptian wisdom.
Our fellowship is about personal growth and learning to understand those around you as well as yourself. Spirituality is about your inner world. Your spirit! You look at yourself on the inside and try to make yourself a better person by realizing the not-so-nice things that you do to others.
We emphasize the inner world and personal growth over dogmatic beliefs.
We believe that the human being is a miniature universe. All aspects of earthly living is inter-linked to a greater pattern in the universe.
We pledge to seek to understand the inner world as thoroughly as we have the outer world - based on the premise that what finds expression in the world at large is a reflection of our interior landscape.
Like the Egyptians, we believe that there are no perceived differences between sacred and mundane actions, as we moderns believe there to be. Every action, no matter how mundane, is viewed as an earthly symbol for a specific divine activity. No aspect of knowledge is divorced from any other aspect.
There will be no theatrics.
The Fellowship respects the freedom of conscience of each member. There are not vows required or commitments to secrecy. All Fellowship activities are optional, and members are free to resign or rejoin at their own choice.
