Egyptians’ careful observation and profound knowledge of the natural world enabled them to identify certain animals with specific qualities that could symbolize certain divine functions and principles, in a particularly pure and striking fashion. As such, certain animals were chosen as symbols for that particular aspect of divinity.
This effective mode of expression is consistent with all cultures. For example, in the West they use expressions such as: quiet as a mouse, sly like a fox, ...etc.
The animal or animal-headed neteru (gods/goddesses) are symbolic expressions of a deep spiritual understanding. When a total animal is depicted in Ancient Egypt, it represents a particular function/attribute in its purest form. When an animal-headed figure is depicted, it conveys that particular function/attribute in the human being. The two forms of Anbu (Anubis), in the two illustrations shown here, clearly distinguish these two aspects.
[The particular qualities of the dog are described on page 100.]
Nebt-Het (Nephthys) represents the high moral qualities--true nobility. Nebt-Het means golden/noblest/mistress (Nebt), of the place/house (Het). Nebt-Het is portrayed as a woman wearing upon her head the symbols that are read as her name.
Nebt-Het (Nephthys) represents total reliance. Nebt-Het (Nephthys) represents the sister of Auset (Isis), and aided Auset (Isis) in collecting the broken pieces of Ausar (Osiris), and protecting the deceased Ausar (Osiris). Hence, Nebt-Het (Nephthys) aids and protects all dead people, through the Duat, towards resurrection. In the Egyptian Model Story, Nebt-Het(Nephthys) was always there for Auset (Isis), and always made her aware of the potential dangers of Set (Seth).
Nebt-Het is one of the four canopic jar patrons, protecting the lungs [see page 78].
In human terms, Nebt-Het(Nephthys) represents what it means to be a Lady--regal. In Ancient Egypt, the woman was called the Lady of the House, with no equivalent title for men! Nebt-Het makes the house a home,so to speak.
Nebt-Het(Nephthys) represents companionship--the rock that is always there for you--total trust, comfort, and support.
